Lecture: Friday, September 9, 4:30pm – 6:00pmWomen’s International Study CenterAcequia Madre House, 614 Acequia MadreEvening lecture is FREE, but pre-registration is requested.Ms. Hamidi is the founder of Kandahar Treasure, a cooperative of embroiders which promotes a unique and traditional art form, called Khamak, to create income sources for the women of Afghanistan. The organization states its goal is to give life and value to the art–carrying with it not only history but tradition and the voice of women…In highly illiterate societies such as Kandahar, Afghanistan, this art form substitutes women’s expression that would otherwise be written in poems or stories. Today, Ms. Hamidi is Professor of Practice at Thunderbird School of Global Management. Born in Kandahar, she emigrated to the United States in 1988 with her family. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia in Religious Studies and Women & Gender. In 2003, she returned to Kandahar. In her remarks, Ms. Hamidi will speak to the social, political, and economic realities women face today in Afghanistan, as well as the transformative power of the handmade amidst a “region ravaged with war and violence.”CLICK HERE TO RSVP FOR THE TALK AT WISC
