Peter Ives

Board Member

Peter was educated at Harvard College (A.B. cum laude in Philosophy, 1976) and Georgetown University Law Center (J.D., 1983). While in Washington, D.C., he worked for the Community Nutrition Institute, Van Ness Feldman Sutcliffe & Levenberg, and Senator Jeff Bingaman.

In 1983, Peter moved to Santa Fe to join Campbell & Black, P.A., later co-founding a new law firm with several other attorneys. In 1987, he joined The Trust for Public Land as the organization’s attorney in its Southwest Regional Office. During his tenure, he worked on hundreds of land conservation projects, including the creation of parks, open spaces, trails, and national refuges, as well as the protection of agricultural lands. He also contributed to large remediation projects.

From 2019 until his retirement in December 2022, Peter served as General Counsel to the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.

Peter remains active in his community, volunteering for several city commissions and programs, including the Buckman Direct Diversion Board, the Sister Cities Committee, and the UNESCO Creative Cities Program. He also serves on the boards of the IAIA Foundation, Solace Crisis Center, and the Jamii Running Club. Additionally, he is a member of Friends of the Old Pecos Trail Scenic Corridor and the Santa Fe Rotary Club, and he participates in land conservation projects.

A significant focus of Peter’s current efforts is working with a group to address affordable and workforce housing challenges in Santa Fe. He is also available as a consultant specializing in land conservation, cultural patrimony preservation, and museum issues, and he pursues his passion for portrait photography.

Peter and his wife, Patricia, have three children, all of whom live in New Mexico—two in Santa Fe—and they are proud grandparents to two grandchildren.
