On June 16, we welcome Dr. Jonathan D.T. Ward, who is the founder of the Atlas Organization, a consultancy on U.S.-China “global competition” and the author of The Decisive Decade: American Grand Strategy for Triumph Over China. Here he describes well his belief that the Chinese Communist Party is focused on overpowering the United States and replacing it as the global power. In his book and in interviews, Ward puts forth a comprehensive plan on how the U.S. government and the private sector must work together to reverse China’s advances by rebuilding our military and strengthening military alliances. For tickets:
The Jonathan Ward program is part of Global Santa Fe Series. It is timely as the level of distrust between China and the U.S. has perhaps not been so great since prior to normalization in 1979. Trade, human rights and even who carries the larger global stick all contribute to the current strained relationship. To provide context, we will welcome three programs which will no doubt stir robust discussion. It is our hope and intent that by listening and attending these three events, you will leave with a greater understanding of myriad of complex issues surrounding China and its relationship with the United States — if not more questions to ponder.
Our next program in the China Series is:
NOTHING TO SEE HERE FOLKS: U.S. – CHINA RELATIONS IN 2023 with DAVID J. FIRESTEIN, Inaugural President and CEO of the Bush Foundation for U.S. China Relations and Founding Member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

JEFFREY TOOBIN, American Lawyer, Author, and Blogger
Tuesday, July 18, 5:30pm social, 6:00pm book talk followed by Q&A
Hotel Santa Fe, 1501 Paseo de Peralta
Global Santa Fe and Collected Works Bookstore are excited to announce Jeffrey Toobin, author of HOMEGROWN: Timothy McVeigh and the Rise of Right-Wing Extremism, will speak on July 18, at 6:00pm (appetizers and cash bar 5:30 pm followed by talk at 6:00 pm) at Hotel Santa Fe, 1501 Paseo de Peralta.
Toobin will discuss how McVeigh, who for a while appeared to have a promising military career, became radicalized, recruited Terry Nichols, and planned the tragic bombing. What distinguishes Toobin’s work is that in addition to interviews with people who had significant roles in the investigation and prosecution including Bill Clinton and Merrick Garland, Toobin was granted access to McVeigh’s attorney’s files (65 boxes) which detail hours of interviews between McVeigh, his attorneys and others.
Toobin suggests how McVeigh came to believe that bombing a federal building was an act of patriotism is not unlike the justification expressed today by Oath Keepers and Proud Boys. The motivation to resort to violence and to initiate what former radio host Rush Limbaugh called a “second violent American revolution,” is meticulously described. That many of the incendiary magazines and books, e.g., The Turner Diaries, that motivated McVeigh in the 90’s, continue to enjoy wide circulation should be a warning to us all.
In addition to a discussion of Homegrown, given Toobin’s years of reporting on the Supreme Court, our conversation will also address his thoughts on the Court’s swing to the right and how Chief Justice Roberts might handle the ethical questions that have stained this session.
Jeffrey Toobin, a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School, is the bestselling author of 11 books including The Oath and The Nine. For nearly two decades, he reported and was chief legal analyst for CNN.
Cost of admission is $35 for nonmembers and $25 for Global Santa Fe members. For more information on registering, go to the website at www.globalsantafe.org or telephone the office at 505/982-4931.
