Youth Leadership Diplomacy Program
What Makes Youth Leadership Diplomacy Program Different?
A “Glocal” Approach – students develop global awareness and civic confidence while taking meaningful action in their local communities. Our curriculum builds four core competencies:
- Investigating the World
- Recognizing Perspectives
- Communicating Ideas
- Taking Action—right here at home
Access is Non-Negotiable – YLDP removes every financial barrier to participation. Students and teachers join the program at no cost, thanks to the generosity of local donors. But we do ask for something in return: commitment. Students are expected to show up, engage fully, and earn the opportunity for international exchange. Leadership is practiced, not presumed.
The Exchange Trifecta – What sets YLDP apart is its multi-layered design. Every student experiences three levels of exchange:
- Peer Exchange – Students from up to 10 schools across the state collaborate and connect across differences.
- Intergenerational Exchange – Youth learn from diplomats, educators, and community leaders in meaningful dialogue.
- International Exchange – Students travel abroad (currently to Cuba and Oaxaca, Mexico), practicing their skills while immersed in a new culture.
Student Voice and Ownership – YLDP is participatory by design. Students help shape the program experience and are given agency in how, when, and what they learn. Alumni co-facilitate orientation for new cohorts. Students speak at intergenerational events, public talks, our annual gala, and graduation. Students access internship and volunteer opportunities through Global Santa Fe and partner organizations. Global Santa Fe provides letters of recommendation and college application support. And of course, students use their YLDP experience to apply for scholarships, civic leadership opportunities, and career exploration placements (e.g., Mayor’s Office, The New Mexican, Sister Cities program).
