Under Fire

Under Fire is our signature series featuring an exchange of on-the-ground experiences and new perspectives on specific topics ranging from journalism to democracy to climate change.

Democracy Under Fire (formerly Journalism under Fire) is a program of Global Santa Fe.
This global conference was launched in 2018 in Santa Fe, New Mexico as an in-person event and held again in 2019 — when it welcomed over 1,600 attendees, including over 400 students and
65 international journalists over three days. The conference has moved to the virtual realm over four weeks in late 2020 due to global travel restrictions related to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Democracy Under Fire

The decline in global freedom, while not a new phenomenon, is one that is increasing in intensity and reach. For the last fifteen years, the number of countries experiencing a worsening of freedom has exceeded those showing improvement. And, the U.S. is not immune from this trend. Join journalists, activists, policymakers, and others for a conversation on the state of democracy and what steps are and can be taken to reverse this disturbing recession of freedoms that are too often taken for granted.
